Remarks: nomen dubium. Originally named as Sciurus chinensis in 1843, but not described until 1867 as Macroxus chinensis, with holotype BMNH 70b. Known only from the type series. Ellerman 1940 coined the combination Callosciurus chinensis. This uncertain species has been over time placed in genus Tomeutes, Sundasciurus, and as a synonym of Tomeutes (=Callosciurus) pygerythrus lokroides, and of Tomeutes / Sundasciurus philippinensis, and most recently suspected to referrable to South American genus Guerlinguetus--Moore and Tate 1959 ("On the Identity of the Tree Squirrrel Macroxus chinensis Gray, 1867", Am. Mus. Novitates: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/331986 ) believed it to be a member of the Sciurinae, not of Callosciurinae. Not much more investigation of this taxon seems to have been done since.
